SUV Rollover Accidents

The combination of a higher center of gravity and narrower track width make SUV's much more susceptible to rollover accidents than almost any other vehicle on the market today. Loading the roof rack with suitcases or sports gear can add to the instability of the vehicle in a turn. SUV rollover accidents can happen more easily than you might think. For example, an SUV can slip off of a curb, throwing the vehicle into a lean. The weight of the SUV can then propel vehicle further into the roll. The same thing can happen if an SUV slides on wet pavement. An SUV rollover can happen so fast that the driver may not realize what is happening.

Statistics show that SUV rollover accidents accounted for more than 10,000 fatalities across the United States in 1999. Sales of SUV's continue to rise as do the number of SUV rollover accidents. SUV's are considered family vehicles in the auto industry so, even though they can do some off-roading, they are not equipped with roll bars.
